Come to the home of John Johnston and take part in demonstrations of many of the skills needed for the daily life of both Native and Euro Americans at the time that this was a Federal Indian Agency in the early 1800's. A special feature each day will be a first-person presentation highlighting the life of John Johnston's mother Elizabeth and her interaction with both the Johnston family and the many other visitors to this place, including future President William Henry Harrison. Many activities will be hands-on so each visitor can experience first-hand how our ancestors made a life for themselves. This is an excellent event for the entire family. Bring a picnic lunch, or buy one of ours. Complete the day with a visit to the Indian and Canal Museum and be sure to take time for a ride on the canal boat General Harrison of Piqua. COST: Saturday: regular site admission of $8.00/adults, $4.00/children 6-12. On Sunday, July 11 we will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Ohio Historical Society by offering free admission to the site to all visitors. There will be a small charge of $2.00/adults and $1.00/children 6-12 for canal boat rides Sunday, but Piqua Friends and OHS members can enjoy the canal boat ride at no cost as always.

Tree Board Reminds Residents
Wanting to plant a new tree? Proper planting and care, soil amendments, hole size, timely watering, and pruning are sound cultural practices to get your tree off to a good start and enjoyment for years. Stop by the City offices for a tree planting application (if in the curb lawn) and a free list of recommended tree varieties.
Your street trees also need to be trimmed to 8 feet above the surface of public sidewalks and 14 feet above street/alley surfaces. That includes evergreens that are encroaching the sidewalks.
We have many walkers and bike riders and trimming your trees is for the safety of all citizens.
If you have questions, please contact Tipp City at 667-6305.

Troy Daily News, Piqua Daily Call & Rest Of Brown Publishing To Be Auctioned Off In Bankruptcy Court 06/28/2010
Assets of the financially troubled Brown Publishing Co. could be put up for auction in July in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court’s eastern district of New York.
A deadline for bidding hadn’t been posted on the court’s website at 6 p.m. Friday, June 25, but Brown attorney Edward M. Fox on Friday said he expects the deadline to be in July.
Brown Media Corp. — a new corporation made up of three Brown executives, including Roy Brown, its president/CEO — has said it will bid $15.3 million for the Cincinnati-based company’s assets in Ohio, New York, Texas, South Carolina, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Wyoming. An auction will be held if more than one bid is received.
PNC Bank, Brown’s largest secured creditor, has approved a credit bid of at least $20 million and doesn’t want the court to approve a sale for less than that.
Brown, which filed for Chapter 11 protection on April 30, publishes several daily and weekly newspapers in the Miami Valley.
The potential sale of Brown’s assets to a company comprised of three of its executives drew the ire of a committee of Brown’s unsecured creditors. - READ THE FULL ARTICLE BY CLICKING HERE -

WACO Military Experience Returns To Troy 06/27/2010
Troy, Ohio, home of the WACO Aircraft Company, will host the second annual WACO Military Experience, on July 9, 10 & 11th, 2010. The WACO Military Experience will take place at Historic WACO Field which is home to the WACO Air Museum and Learning Center, located at 1865 S. County Rd. 25A, Troy, Ohio.
This wonderful educational family event will feature a variety of Military displays that will include vintage aircraft representing 20th century conflicts along with authentically restored military vehicles. Visitors will also enjoy the re-enactors and living history encampments, viewing the authentic military uniforms and artifacts and home front displays. Also planned will be various military drill demonstrations. This is an event that honors our Nation’s veterans for their many sacrifices and it creates an opportunity to show school age kids the up close and personal realities of past conflicts.
WACO stands for the Weaver Aircraft Co., who was a leading manufacturer of civilian aircraft in the 1920’s and 1930’s and had a reputation for building rugged and versatile airplanes. Many early aeronautical records were set by pilots in WACO’s. WACO aircraft were sold all over the world, and some foreign governments militarized their versions in the 30’s. However, WACO is most known for developing the WACO CG-4A glider of D-Day fame. This combat glider was used by US Airborne Forces in 7 major invasions in Europe and Asia during WWII.
As part of the admission price, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the WACO Air Museum that features a collection of WACO memorabilia, photos and a couple of WACO biplanes. The WACO Historical Society commemorates the many achievements of this outstanding company on its 78 acre site, which includes a functioning 2,200 foot grass airstrip open to general aviation. (Designator 1WF on aeronautical charts)
Another great attraction for this weekend will be the Landing Vehicle, Tracked (LVT) owned by Northern Ohio resident, Tom Price. This LVT was used in the filming of the movie “Flags of Our Fathers”, a story of Iwo Jima and directed by Clint Eastwood. This is one of six known LVT’s still in operation today.
Also on display will be a M4 Sherman Tank. The M4 Sherman, formally Medium Tank, M4, was the primary tank used by the United States during World War II. It was also distributed to the Allies. Production of the M4 medium tank exceeded 50,000 units and its chassis served as the basis for numerous other armored vehicles such as tank destroyers, tank retrievers, and self-propelled artillery. The tank size is 25 feet long, 10 feet wide, and weighs in at 72,000lbs.
Area non-profit organizations, veteran’s organizations and memorabilia vendors will also be on hand to display throughout the three day weekend. In addition, visitors to the event can enjoy great food and themed presentations.
As a special feature to the weekend’s entertainment, the WACO Military Experience committee presents the 338th Army Stage Band at the Waco Air Museum on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Known as the most requested ensemble from the 338th Army Band, the stage band is comprised of approximately 25 members and rouses audiences young and old with American jazz and nostalgic music from the 1930's to the current popular musical styles of today. Yaskawa America Inc. announced that its Motoman division has secured land at the new Austin Road interchange with Interstate 75 for a 300,000-square-foot office and production facility.
The building will be Motoman’s North American base, Yaskawa said. It wiconsolidate both the current West Carrollton headquarters and a plant shared with Stillwater Technologies located in Troy.
The new facility will house up to 275 employees, with room to grow by as much as 200,000 square feet.
The company said design for the new facility is under way, and construction could begin in July, with a possible move-in date of June 2011. Ground has not been broken, Schockman said.
The announcement was expected. In recent days, the Montgomery County Transportation Improvement District set aside 22.5 acres adjacent to the interchange in case Motoman chose it.
Miami County officials had hoped to keep the robotics manufacturer within the county thanks to an initiative by local construction baron Steve Bruns, who had proposed a site north of Upper Valley Medical Center along the I-75 corridor. It has not been formally announced when the Troy plant will close.
