Piqua Superintendent Rick Hanes thanked the staff of the Miami County Educational Service Center (ESC) for their quick and professional action during an accidental situation involving Piqua students on the bike path above Fountain Park while on a field trip on Friday, April 30th. The staff is employed by the Miami County ESC towork with the Piqua multiple disability students.
“These staff and students acted quickly and compassionately to ensure that all students were safe,” stated Hanes. “I am pleased that they followed the correct protocol and acted appropriately to ensure the safety of all students.”
A class of students was on a field trip to the park with the full permission of their parents.
While looking at a turtle, one of the students’ wheelchairs slipped down a steep embankment and into the shallow water below. The trail at that section did not have a fence or railing. Several teachers and aides attempted to quickly assist the students and proceeded to go into the water.
Safety officials were promptly called and assisted as necessary and all involved were transported to the hospital.
“We will continue to work with the Miami County ESC to assess the situation to see how we might use this situation to improve upon the service we provide to our students,” stated Hanes. “In the meantime, I am very proud of the compassion, dedication and quick action shown by the ESC staff and our students. They are more than a class, they are a team, and it showed by how they handled this situation.”
