![]() “Try Your Hand At Historic Postcard Tinting” Collaboration in the arts is the key to the first in a series of Community Arts Programs that will be held Sunday, August 15 in the Troy- Hayner Cultural Center Art Studio from 1-5pm. This first in a series of Community Art activities sponsored by The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center will give anyone who wants to participate a chance to colorize an enlarged historic Troy postcard image from the 1900’s. Large 30”x40” reproductions of historic postcards images have been transferred to artist canvas and will be available to “tint” with non-toxic color glazes that will complete the historic postcard images for use in the Troy Historic Alliance’s educational traveling display. Thanks to a pilot program supported by the Troy-Hayner , local artist Karen Purke, owner of “Have Art, Will Travel” will lead community participants in “Postcard Tinting” activities at the Troy- Hayner art studio on Sunday August 15 from 1-5 pm. Located at 301 W. Main Street ,Troy, this “drop in” art activity is free and open to the public and reservations are not needed. The activity is open to anyone 7 years old to adult . Young people ages 7-15 need to be accompanied by an adult. The approximate length of participation time on the “postcard tinting activity” is about 15 minutes, to allow participation by as many people as possible. During the 1900’s, before the widespread use of color printing, thousands of artists were employed by printing companies to tint picture post cards, photographs and lithographs (line art prints). Hand coloring prints and postcards was also frequently done in the home by disabled veterans, children and the elderly. The photographs used for historic postcards were generally captured by a local photography studio or traveling salesman for the printing companies, who sold runs of postcards to local merchants for resale to their patrons. Before the use of the telephone and e-mail postcards were a very popular means of communication. Many communities would have at least one, or even a series of postcards of all the major landmarks, government buildings, bridges and churches. Postcard collecting was a popular hobby. Consider beating the heat by participating in the time honored art activity of “Postcard Tinting”. Engage your senses with images from Troy’s past on Sunday, August 15 from 1-5pm. Additional Community Art activities are scheduled for the following future events; the Festival of Nations, Taste of Troy and the Hayner- Family Fun Day.
