Cincinnati Dockers Australian Rules Football Team falls to Chicago

FAIRFIELD, OH - The Cincinnati Dockers Australian Rules Football Club started their first regular season game in impressive fashion, but could not carry that energy into the second half as they fell to Chicago United, defending Mid American Australian Football League (MAAFL) champions, 111-43 last Saturday afternoon at Point Pleasant Park in Fairfield, OH.

Cincinnati made the game interesting in the first half, sending the ball into a very active forward line and actually held a small lead over the reigning MAAFL champions at the first quarter break.  At halftime, Chicago made up some of that difference, but the Dockers were still on fire and brimming with confidence, going into the halftime break tied with Chicago at 43 points each.

However, the Dockers would have very few looks at the goals in the second half, as Chicago made a tactical change in the second half that the Dockers could not overcome.  The United took a 20 plus point lead into the third quarter, yet the Dockers were still not phased, as teams can score quickly in this game.  Unfortunately, it was Chicago who would prove that fact, turning on the afterburners and putting away the Dockers with plenty of forwards and much fresher legs.  The final score read Chicago with 16 goals and 15 behinds for 111 points to Cincinnati with 7 goals and 1 behind for 43 points.

Cincinnati will next take the field on June 20th in Louisville, as the Dockers will host their historic rivals in the Nashville Kangaroos.  The match will take place at Champions Park at 2050 River Road, just south of the Ohio River.  Nashville are currently 1-1 this season, winning a home match against the Baton Rouge Tigers 143 to 45, and losing to Florida United in Ft. Lauderdale 73 to 39.

The Cincinnati Dockers are an Australian Rules Football club based out of Fairfield, Ohio. Established in 1996, they are the oldest club of its kind in the United States. Last year, the Dockers were co-winners of the USAFL division 4 national championship. For more information about the Dockers please visit their website at www.cincinnatidockers.com. Scoring note: In Australian Rules Football, a goal is worth 6 points, and a behind is worth 1 point.

Note: The Cincinnati Dockers combine with the Louisville Kings for all 2009 MAAFL games.
