Evendale, OH - The Troy Bruins professional hockey team returned to the ice from their holiday break with a roar, beating in-state rival Queen City Storm on the road 4-2 in what would be an aggressive and physical battle between two close AAHL rivals. Troy flew right out of the gates with determination to defend their most recent overtime loss to the Storm back in December, and with a little help from teamates Eric Lang and Aaron Blades, Bruins forward Ryan Stern blasted a shot past Queen City netminder Jon Dorman only 1:08 into the game to take the early lead. Just as quickly as the Bruins established themselves on the scoresheet, Troy's Lee McClure would set the tone for the physicality by engaging in a round of fisticuffs only about a minute later. An end to end battle ensued for the remainder of the opening period, and while Bruins goalie Rob Mattison was able to turn away all 13 Storm shots his way, Troy would extend their lead to two with a Chris Tasic goal at the 18:10 mark, with linemates Kevin Lee and Willie Boyle notching assists on the play. After twenty minutes, the Bruins skated into their dressing room ahead 2-0 and outshooting the home team 17-14. The second period would begin with an early powerplay chance for the Storm, for which they cashed in at the 5:19 mark to cut the Bruins lead back to one. In a reverse of the opening period, the second period would be the Storm's chance to establish the tempo and flow of the game, and after a physical period of play, finally tied the game in the closing seconds of the second, with former Bruin Josh Tucker lighting the lamp with just :57 to go. Shots in the middle frame would still favor Troy, edging the Storm 12-10. For the Bruins, the third period made all the difference, as Ryan Stern once again stuck with a shot past Dorman less than five minutes in once again assisted by Blades to recapture the lead. Not looking back, the Bruins added one final goal, again scored by Tasic at 18:52, to secure the 4-2 final score just in time to ring in the new year. Shots in the final period would be an even 10-10 for a game total of 39-33 in favor of Troy. Bruins Menton Called Up To ECHL 12/29/2010

After a delayed start thanks to the capacity crowd filing into the Polar Palace, the Troy Bruins quickly got to work utilizing their speed to set up a scoring chance within the first minute of play, with starting centerman Todd McIlrath ringing a shot off the inside post for the game's first heart stopper. An end to end flow settled in throughout the rest of the period, and despite a handful of powerplay opportunities given to each club, neither could find the back of the net after twenty minutes of play, with the Loggers slightly edging the Bruins in shots 11-10. Lapeer fans wouldn't have to wait long into the second period to witness the first Logger goal in team history, as an odd man rush would create a tap-in score with Derek Osborne notching the distinctive honor for his club to put the home team ahead by one just over two minutes into the second period. A noticeably more physical tempo would take over the middle frame, with end to end battles continuing to punctuate quality scoring chances on either side of the ice, Lapeer content with their one goal lead. Troy would finally find the back of the net at the 15:00 mark, thanks to the efforts of Josh Swenson assisted by former NCAA standout Todd McIlrath crashing the net for a rebound goal to tie the game at one. With the seal officially broken for the regular season, the Bruins would waste little time in earning their first lead of the season, with Chris Tasic breaking down the near wing for a powerful wrister past the five-hole of Lapeer's netminder Dave Desander just :48 later. Troy would skate into the second intermission with the 2-1 lead after forty minutes, and would take a commanding lead in shots after outshooting the Loggers 23-13 in the second. The third period would truly turn the game into a barnburner, as the hitting and speed intensified from the opening faceoff. Unlike the previous stanza, the fans would have to endure multiple close calls on either end, highlighted by a number of odd rushes and fluke bounces in front of the nets. After battling back to even the shots in the period, Lapeer would again tie the game at the 12:38 mark, off a powerplay, giving the game a definite intense feel and setting up a spectacular finish. Troy wouldn't quit however, as with less than five minutes to go in regulation, returning Bruin Lee McClure snapped a bullet of a shot top shelf past the shoulder of Desander for the eventual game winner at 15:26. In a climactic conclusion, Lapeer would pull their goalie in the final minute, and with a penalty being assessed to the Bruins, made a final unsuccessful charge to even the score, but was denied by a stellar performance by Bruins veteran goalie Rob Mattison, the game's second star. Finals shots on goal favored the Bruins 48-36, with the Bruins taking their first two points of the season with the 3-2 victory. Troy remains on the road when they travel to Revolution Arena in Battle Creek, Michigan next Friday night to meet the Battle Creek Revolution for the first time, before returning home the following night to open the home portion of the schedule on October 30 at 8pm inside the historic Hobart Arena in Troy. Tickets for the home opener are still available for only $8 by purchasing online at www.TroyBruins.com or by calling 985-PUCK. It's more than just hockey...it's FUN! Facing off for the first time in either team's history, the Bruins would open the scoring with a David Lynne goal by crashing the net just four minutes and change into the opening period. After Queen City tied the score off an odd man rush, Troy reclaimed the lead with 1:44 to go in the first, this time scored by former Bowling Green State University NCAA standout Todd McIlrath, before the Bruins capitalized on a chance in front of the Storm net with just :29 left to send the team into the first intermission ahead 3-1. Both teams would come out flying in the second period, with both Troy and Queen City notching three goals apiece, while returning Bruin and Beavercreek native Lee McClure added his team's fifth goal before engaging in a round of fisticuffs with Storm tough-guy Charles Harvey after taking a nasty slash to the torso. After forty minutes, the Bruins led 6-4 on the scoreboard. Bruins head coach Rick Szabo would utilize the third period to continue evaluating players in various positions by mixing up the line combinations and positional pairings, while netminder Rob Mattison turned away all Storm shots in the period, keeping the home team from closing the scoring gap.
