I am a Trojan, born and raised, and I believe that our elected officials are letting us down. Here in Ohio’s 8th District the unemployment rate is higher than the national average, manufacturers continue to leave, and we are in dire need of assistance on a variety of other issues. Congressman John Boehner has represented Troy and the 8th for almost 20 years, most of my entire life, and I think it’s time for a change. Boehner has consistently refused to bring federal money to our community. While the city of Troy tries to find the money to repair roads and bridges, keep snow trucks out on the streets, and deal with expensive services, he votes against programs that would assist our municipalities in these rough times. He voted against extending unemployment benefits which would have helped thousands of his constituents who have been laid off from their jobs (which he didn’t fight for in the first place.) Unfortunately, Boehner has fought tooth and nail to preserve tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and Wall Street. We need a Congressman who will fight for we the people, not his golf buddies. Boehner voted against the repair projects along I-75 that were funded by the stimulus bill. And why shouldn’t he; he is never in the district to drive on our streets! We need someone who drives on our streets, lives in our neighborhood, cares about Troy, Tippecanoe, and Piqua, and wants to help the people of Ohio’s 8th. We need Justin Coussoule. As a West Point grad, Army Captain, father of two, and small business owner, Justin knows the meaning of hardwork. He understands the concerns of the middle and working class folks of Miami County. He understands that Trojans value community togetherness, public service, and dedication. And he’d like to meet with and hear the concerns of the hardworking people of Troy and Miami County, who are fed up with business-as-usual. Justin will be at Night Sky Coffee House at 8am on Saturday August 21 to meet voters. Please come out and see why he wants to be your Congressman, and let him know why you are fed up with our current non-representative. Cameron DeHart Troy It's my website, here are my thoughts. By JT Szabo One week ago today, the peace and tranquillity of Troy and Miami County was shattered with the news of an apparent murder and kidnapping on Troy's west side. what? I thought as the news came into MCP at about 3pm. Where? as I remembered that not only do I have a lot of friends and collegues who live at the Towne Park Apartments, not to mention it is the former residence of my own sister just a month or so ago. Like a lot of people around here, the full scope of the tragedy has only begun to sink in. Yesterday, a lot of the victims friends were finally able to say goodbye at his home church, while the killer sits right down the street from our MCP offices at the Miami County Jail downtown Troy. I passed the jail on my way to a meeting this morning. I could only think about the man accused of walking into an apartment and blowing away an innocent kid surfing on his laptop. I suppose it's a good thing that I will never be able to understand this action, or how anyone could kill so coldly and cowardly. Maybe I'm not supposed to. And what if he hadn't crashed his Honda in Dayton, which flew his Glock 9mm out of the window just before police swarmed the vehicle? Would more innocent people have been shot? Would he have taken his own life? Too many "what if's" for me. A heavy post this time, I know, but something like this shakes one's inner sense of safety in a city like Troy. If he did that to his own family, I can't imagine what he is capable of to a complete stranger in the wrong place at the wrong time. I guess we will all have to see what happens when the judicial system takes over. He was arraigned last week, and despite being very polite to the Judge, she issued a whopping $1.6million bond for his three felony counts (murder, kidnapping & abduction). Will he plead guilty? How could he not? It wasn't like an episode of "The First 48" where police haven't a clue who the perp is...that secret was dispelled the moment he sped away to Indiana, reportedly to kill other members of his family from his "hit list". Sick. The city of Troy, in it's history, has actually been the site of one public execution..a hanging back in the 19th century. What will happen to Jeff Bedinger is in the hands of the law now. Taking a boy across state lines in the pursuit to commit murder while already being wanted by the FBI is the very definition of a "federal offense", and I don't think anyone would be surprised for the prosecution to pursue the death penalty. This leaves me torn. On one hand...I think having to rot in a small cell for the rest of your life with the knowledge that you will never have freedom again is a wonderful punishment. Yet, on the other hand...for what he did to his family and his community...the "needle" can't come soon enough. Anger is a dangerous weapon. Fact of life. Thoughts? Publishers Take - Lebron Who? 07/09/2010
It's my website, so here are my thoughts. By JT Szabo. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert held nothing back against the "coward James" in this open letter posted on the team's website CLICK HERE TO READ So after all that hype, the espn special, and years of on again, off again speculation...it has been finally announced! the "great" championship-less Lebron James is a Miami Heat. Woohoo. Obviously, I'm lathering on the sarcasm pretty thick with this post (and you thought the soccer one was rough!) There's been no doubt to me that "King James" as he adorned himself after making the incredible jump from an Ohio high school strait to Quicken Loans Arena as a Cleveland Cavalier, is no role model after publicly insinuating his dislike for being there. It all started, and ended, for me the first time he was spotted wearing other city's logos and apparel in public. Have some class for christ's sake! Now THAT's the kind of support Cleveland and it's sports fans want..someone so ungrateful to his fans that he wouldn't be caught in at least a Browns hat (well, come to think about it, I don't blame him for not wearing a Browns hat...after all, he is trying to be champion). So good riddance, Ohio doesn't need you, no matter how much you think our world will be torn apart by your drastic parting on a made for TV special hyped as much as the equally uninteresting Tiger Woods press conference. Boring. Besides, everyone knows college basketball is better and more fun to watch anyway. Thoughts? Leave your comment, it really won't hurt my feelings. Promise. It's my website, so here are my thoughts. By JT Szabo - Discuss In The Readers Forums So it seems that for the last handful of weeks, my normal daily routine has been bombarded with this curious little event down in South Africa called the world cup. Now, South Africa has done great things for our pop culture...as it brought us Dave Matthews of Dave Matthews Band fame. Yet, I am in no means a soccer fan..oops, I meant "futobol" as it is known in most of the world. It's not ignorance nor is it hatred for the world's most popular sport. I just think it's boring. "but JT...it's the most popular sport in the world! it's pure athleticism!" Muhammed is the most common name on earth...but it's not in my neck of the woods, so that point is rather moot. Besides, in most places in the world today (except for the cliche' "soccer mom" world here in the US), kicking a ball around an open field is easy to set up and easy to participate in. Naturally, something that everyone can play anywhere without any special equipment would be quite catchy huh? But let's face it...there is absolutely nothing fun or interesting about watching a three hour game end in a 0-0 tie. Or worse, a team actually manages to put the ball into that absurdly over-sized goal...and then celebrates like they've just made contact with an alien civilization with warp drive and a cure for cancer. Ridiculous. But what irks me perhaps most, is the "athletes" themselves. Why become athletes at all? It's very clear that any professional soccer player would be much better off as a Broadway actor...falling down and grabbing your ankle in fake pain - and SCENE! How do the paramedics and trainers know who to treat? I'm sure everyone's seen the soccer clip from a few years ago where a player is battling for the ball, and is inadvertently kicked in the leg by his opponent who then proceeds to steal the ball for his team. What does our hero do you ask? Well, he pauses for a moment, looks around for a referee and then grabs his face and falls to the ground in agony! That is enough for me to change the channel...every time. Ok, so i'm not going to be an insensitive jerk the entire article. I completely understand the patriotism that goes hand in hand with cheering and rooting for one's country in an international event. The Olympics do it to me every time. So, for a lot of people swept up by the world cup...seeing our native red white and blue kicking some Ethiopian ass was great! But don't ever think for a second that all those people cramming bars to watch the USA matches are fans. They're Americans...and we will always support anything that involves us showing off to the rest of the world. But we lost! Oh no! Naturally, I was doing something productive with the time that others watched the US get eliminated for the tournament, and it was a pretty close game too! But almost immediately, something strange happened as I browsed my Facebook news feed that afternoon - people were starting to root for other countries! What the hell is that about? One friend posted a status which read "USA Lost - go Britain!" Are you kidding me? This escapes me in a most profound way. Maybe they like tea or something stupid like that. In the end, the craze over the world cup is already receding, as expected people don't care anymore. Professional Soccer is starting to slide back into it's destined place as something most American's don't think about much. Give them sticks or something to swing at each other, make the field much smaller and have more scoring...then it might become something i'd like to invest my time in seeing. Alas, I fear that it won't happen any time soon. So, I think I'll stick to the "big 4" sports popular here in America - Football, Baseball, Hockey & Basketball. They're just more exciting. No wonder there are so many soccer riots in Europe. The fans need to get their money's worth somehow! Letter To The Editor - Bethel Township Levy 04/26/2010
Letter to the editor: Bethel Township Levy discussion There seems to be a lot of confusion about school financing and the levy on the May ballot. All Bethel Township residences need to come to the April 29, 2010 levy discussion meeting that will be held in the auditorium at 7:00 P.M. You can also go to www.bethel.k12.oh.us to see frequently asked questions. If you still have questions, call 845-9414 to talk to the superintendent. The board members will be glad to answer your questions, too. Mary Welch Letter To The Editor- Obama's Healthcare 03/23/2010
By Cameron DeHart The American people deserve the truth about health care, and neither party is stepping up to the plate. Now, I would consider myself a fairly tech-savvy politico, and I’m having difficulty finding anything online that gives an impartial examination of the health care proposals currently in front of Congress. (To my knowledge, there isn’t a concrete ‘bill’ yet.) In this vacuum, Obama is doing what he does best: articulating his idealism in feel-good generalities, while his own party bickers back and forth over a few key points. The Republicans, led by our very own Congressman John Boehner, are preying upon weakness on the Left by stirring the resurgent anti-government populism of Middle America. Few talking heads on either side are making sense, and no one is making any progress. The Left, where I sit, has yet to offer a straightforward plan for health care reform. Mr Obama certainly has his good ideas, but without a unified Democratic Party, he has yet to offer a physical plan for every American to hold and read. He needs to step up as the de facto leader of his party, and take charge. We need to know exactly where the money is going to come from, and how exactly a public-option would be made available. On the Right, leaders must step up and put an end to the propagation of the sensationalist lies. The comparisons to Hitler and Stalin, the Communist fear-mongering, and the high-flying rhetoric of ‘freedom’ and ‘liberty’ must stop. By preying upon The People’s fears, the GOP is not doing this country a service. If there really are death panels (there aren’t), then Sarah Palin needs to provide citation. If the Republican Party really wants to do well, then they need to quit throwing temper tantrums and sit down with Democrats for a serious discussion. I believe Americans need to take matters into their own hands, and I’m not talking about shouting paranoid, nonsensical one-liners at Town Hall meetings.. Shouting platitudes from a sea of angry people is no way to communicate ideas. Both sides need to sit down and have a real discussion. Leave the hyperbole, Obama=Hitler posters, and AR-15s at home, and bring your thinking caps and genuine grievances. I beseech the people of Miami County, and American at large, to turn off the TV: stop listening to the Glenn Becks and Keith Olbermanns. Stop forwarding those chain emails. Go to www.factcheck.org, a nonpartisan examination of politics, and learn the truth. Letter From The Publisher - State Of MCP 01/20/2010
What's Happening With MiamiCountyPost.com? That’s what this “Blog” section of our site is all about — telling you what we’re up to, where we stand with regards to the goings on in the news industry, and our thoughts on all things journalistic. So here’s where we’re at: Right now, MiamiCountyPost is the culmination of 21st century technology and a deep passion for our local communities. Mix in various aspects of the news such as politics and business, and a decent bit of experience in business, building communities, technology, writing, editing, publishing, event coordination, and what we have is more than just another local website...its a community...a way to get connected to our neighbors. In addition, we’re real people. We have hobbies and interests that we share with other members of the community. We frequent the restaurants and retail businesses in the area, we attend local concerts, farmers markets, recreational events, and club meetings in Miami County. In short, we’re a lot like you. The goal here is to be not only more informed about the goings on in our communities, but to be more engaged in our communities. It seems that every time I speak to someone, even if they live in the same town as me, each of us has something to share that the other was completely in the dark about. Why is that? Well, because a good bit of the information we each get is by word-of-mouth, usually when it’s too late to do anything about it. It happens too often. Communities are more vibrant and productive when they have a central point of reference for news and information that affects them or interests them in some way. One big difference with MiamiCountyPost.com is that we’ll be inviting you to participate in shaping the publication, how we deliver content, and how to better serve the community. We hope that this helps insure that the various communities within our larger Miami County community are better able to interact and share news and information. Still in Beta “Beta” means “not 100%”. It means we’re still testing features, processes, layout, and new ideas. It means that things are in a state of flux and may change dramatically, for better or for worse, on an ongoing basis as we pursue perfection. It means there might be glitches and perhaps even a little bit of downtime. It means that the content will not be updated as frequently as we’d like in the beginning while we iron out kinks in software, servers, vendors, sponsors, and lots of other stuff that goes into producing a news site. So why open it up if it’s “not 100%”? Because we hope that our community will offer us feedback on the service sooner rather than later when it might be harder to change direction or implement new features. Because we hope you’ll see where we’re going and be inspired to get involved. Because we believe that building a community-oriented portal without getting input from the community is necessarily and by definition *not* community-oriented! What Can I Do? Everything, or nothing at all. It’s up to you. We’re doing this because it’s a useful service to plenty of people we’ve already spoken to, and based on those discussions, we think it’ll be useful to many more. If all you ever do is consume content, that’s fine with us — but we want you to know that you can contribute if you wish. If you’re a photographer, or happen to find yourself with a camera passing by a protest in front of the safety building, take a shot! If your child’s school is holding an event of interest to people anywhere in Miami County, give us a shout and tell us about it! If you’re a student of journalism who likes hanging around downtown Troy, we’d love to talk to you! If you’re a business owner being affected by new developments in state or local laws, the local economy, infrastructure projects, or traffic, let us know! Everyone who participates in the community in any way, and can express their ideas either in words, video, photographs, or other ways we haven’t though of yet is a potential contributor. Where do I send news, ideas, or feedback? For the moment, send any and all communication to submit@miamicountypost.com By JT Szabo By JT Szabo Swine Flu: Nope, Not Gonna Do it. 04/28/2009
