The Ohio Community Service Council has announced that Council on Rural Services has been awarded funding of $266,000 for the AmeriCorps for Entrepreneurial Success program for 2011-2012.  The grant dollars will enable 20 AmeriCorps members to provide academic assistance and teach work readiness in a program that addresses the gap in education and employability skills for teens and young adults in Darke, Miami and Shelby County.

The program will include junior and senior high school components that will work in conjunction with Gateway Youth Program, ACES (Achievement Center for Educational Success), Darke, Miami and Shelby County schools, and AmeriCorps members.  The students will obtain hands-on experience in business, academic instruction, and a volunteer support program that features career counseling, support mentoring, and tutoring.  Also included is a family advocate to strengthen family involvement and provide social service links.

“The current year’s AmeriCorps grant cycle was highly competitive due to the strong and growing demand by organizations for resources and dwindling government dollars.  We are extremely pleased that Council on Rural Services was one of the twenty-six grants awarded in Ohio”, said Kristy Warren, AmeriCorps Project Coordinator.

Council on Rural Services is currently looking for 20 AmeriCorps members that want to become involved with this new direct service program.  AmeriCorps for Entrepreneurial Success will help our communities’ young people improve their career success and economic independence and give opportunities for AmeriCorps members to give back.  Members can also earn a $5,000 Segal Education Award that can be used to pay for college or graduate school or to repay qualified student loans. Fulltime AmeriCorps members also receive a modest living allowance and health care benefits.

For more information about how to apply for this exciting opportunity, check the programs Facebook page or call Kristy Warren at 937-778-5220 ext. 456.  To apply directly to AmeriCorps for Entrepreneurial Success, please visit http://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?fromSearch=true&id=40797 by June 30.

Parking Lot Becomes Dangerous In Troy
Submitted Via Facebook

Even with the recent strings of poweroutages at the Excellence in Dentistry office in eastern Troy, nobody could have guessed what was about to happen in their own parking lot as a late model Land Rover, owned by EID physician Dr. Stevens, caught fire after an apparent electrical short.

Quickly arriving to the scene, Troy Fire Department crews from nearby station #2, which is almost directly across the street from the Dental clinic, put out the blaze before it could spread to other vehicles or the building itself. No injuries were reported, and nobody was near the vehicle at the time of the blaze.

Edison Welcomes Wendeln to Board of Trustees
Staff Reports

Tony Wendeln of Piqua is no newcomer to the boardroom.

Wendeln, long-time chief executive officer of Murray Wells Wendeln & Robinson CPAs, now brings his considerable expertise to the Board of Trustees of Edison Community College.

“I was really impressed with the board’s level of knowledge and the level of financial competence,” Wendeln said of his first formal meeting as trustee May 18.  “The financial side of running a college is very complicated.  I was very impressed that they had a complete handle on it.  The financial team on staff at Edison is very knowledgeable and works very well together with the Board.”

Ohio Governor John Kasich appointed Wendeln to Edison’s Board of Trustees in late April.  Wendeln replaces former trustee Doug Murray. Wendeln will serve as chairman of the board’s finance committee.

Among the community leaders who endorsed Wendeln’s appointment is Ohio Rep. Richard Adams, (R-Dist.79), also a former Edison trustee.

“Tony has the kind of professional background that will enable him to contribute to the successful operation of the community college,” Adams said, citing, in particular, Wendeln’s “skills,” “personality,” and “willingness to serve.”

“He has a significant amount of community involvement on several boards as a volunteer,” Adams said.  “He’ll be able to get ‘up to speed’ as a competent contributor on the board of trustees quickly.”

Wendeln has served as president of the Piqua Community Foundation, Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce, Piqua Rotary Club, Miami County YMCA, and the Piqua Catholic School Board.  He has also served as treasurer of the Salvation Army and as a trustee of the Lehman Foundation.

Edison’s Board of Trustees is comprised of representatives from each county in its service area—Miami, Darke and Shelby. Wendeln joins Vice Chairman Judith K. Hartman and Trustee Roger E. Luring from Miami County; Chairman Ed Curry, Trustee Kathleen Floyd and Trustee Darryl D. Mehaffie of Darke County; and Trustee J. Kathryn Lukey, Trustee Thomas P. Milligan, and Trustee James W. Thompson of Shelby County.

“Tony has a personality that focuses on working well with others,” Adams continued.  “He will be a real asset to the nine-member board. He has a record of success. He will bring a dimension of the decision-making process that will work well with his colleagues on the board, and work well with the president and those that the president needs.”

Wendeln joined the Piqua CPA firm now known as Murray Wells Wendeln & Robinson CPAs in 1975 and became a CPA in 1977.  He was named as a partner in 1982 and elected CEO in 1996.  He implemented the firm’s first computer system and remains involved in firm operations and administration.  Currently Wendeln practices in the accounting and tax areas for a wide range of business and individuals including not-for-profit enterprises.  He also holds the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) designation from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Prior to serving as a member of the board, Wendeln worked with the Edison Foundation on several projects, he said.  His wife, Karen, is the executive director of the Piqua Community Foundation and formerly taught at Edison as an adjunct instructor in developmental English.  His children, all Miami University graduates, also took several classes at Edison, he said.

Wendeln is a 1971 graduate of Fort Loramie High School and went on to Miami University where he graduated in 1975 with a bachelor of science degree in business, majoring in accounting.  While at Miami, he was active with Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, where he continues to assist the alumni board with tax matters.

Wendeln was awarded the prestigious “Order of George” award for community service by the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce in 1998 and the William Booth Award for service to the Salvation Army, also in 1998.  He has also twice been bestowed with the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Piqua Rotary Club.

He has also served in numerous leadership capacities for fund drives for the Salvation Army, St. Mary Church, Piqua Catholic School and Lehman Catholic High School.

Wendeln and his wife reside in Piqua.

New Meters To Be Installed In Troy, Rest Of County This Summer
Staff Reports

DP&L has advised the City of Troy that from 6-1-2011 through September, 2011, DP&L will be replacing residential electric meters in all of Miami County, including Troy. The new meters are capable of being read electronically from the street in most cases. DP&L has indicated that some of the shared benefits of this project are as follows:

· Eliminate the need for meter reader to physically access the meter, which is occasionally burdensome to the customer.
· Minimize the risk of customer property damage and escape of pets from enclosed areas, as well as promote the safety of their meter readers.
· Ensure accurate reading, eliminating human data-entry errors.
· Provide efficiency improvement that ultimately enables us to reduce costs and keep rates as low as possible.

Replacing the meter will take approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Power will be interrupted during this time. DP&L will notify their customers via automated outbound calls 3-4 days in advance of the replacement.

DP&L will be using Element Utility Service as their contractor to perform most of the replacements. Those employees will wear uniforms and carry identification as contractors for DP&L.

Any questions regarding this project should be directed to DP&L at (937) 331-3900.
