![]() MONICA F. DODSON Monica F. Dodson, 86, formerly of 808 W. Ash St., Piqua, died at 2:55 am, Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Covington Care Center. She was born April 5, 1923 in Medina to the late Royal L. and Frances F. (Schaffer) Burden. She married Terry J. Dodson who preceded her in death in 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Katrinka “Kathy” (Mark “Butch”) Thompson of Piqua; a son J. D. (Sharon Mott) Dodson of Piqua; eight grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by eleven brothers and a sister. Mrs. Dodson was a homemaker, a member of the Covington V.F.W. and was active in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Lodge # 3998 where she served as an officer for many years. She enjoyed the game of golf as evidenced by her years of volunteering for the Covington Eagles Golf Outing. A celebration of her life will begin at 10:00 am Friday March 12, 2010 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Brooks Dodson and Tony Teague as facilitators. ![]() RAYMOND A. “RED” COPSEY Raymond A. “Red” Copsey, 95, of 606½ Riverside Dr., Piqua, died at 1:10 am Friday, March 5, 2010 at his residence. He was born January 31, 1915 in Greene County, Ohio to the late William Lawson and Hattie L. (Thomas) Copsey. He married Ruth V. DeNise July 29, 1937 in Winchester, Indiana; and she survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Sally (Donald) Apple of Piqua; two sons, Terry R. (Beverly) Copsey of Piqua, Randy A. (Constance) Copsey of Piqua; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren, and a great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott Copsey, a brother, and four sisters. Mr. Copsey graduated from Houston High School in 1932. He owned and operated a Service Station and Carry-Out in Piqua for twenty years and then worked at J M Mold Company for twenty years. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #523 in Piqua. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 am Monday, March 8, 2010 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kazy Blocher-Hinds officiating. ![]() MAXINE B. WILLIAMS Maxine B. Williams, 92, of 1744 W. High St., Piqua, died at 3:58 pm Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Brookdale Sterling House of Piqua. She was born January 7, 1918 in Greenville to the late Harrison and Norma (Weaver) Buirley. She married Robert G. Williams April 11, 1937 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (James) Smith of Summerfield, Florida, Nancy (Marvin “Sandy”) DeBerry of Savannah, Georgia; three grandchildren, Michael W. (Patti) Smith of Tipp City, Stephen D. Smith of Troy, and Danielle E. Bowen Of Savannah, Georgia; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, and a grandson. Mrs. Williams was a graduate of Troy High School, and a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. A Springtime funeral service will be announced at a later date. ![]() WILLIAM G. REED William G. Reed, 87, of 1308 Park Ave., Piqua, died at 8:20 am Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at his residence. He was born May 9, 1922 in Piqua to the late Versel E. and Stella (Stelzer) Reed. He married Jeanne Schwab June 22, 1946 in Piqua, and she preceded him in death May 4, 2001. He then married Jean (Baker) Wilson June 28, 2002 in Piqua; and she survives. Other survivors include a daughter Barbara (Richard T.) Spraggs of Piqua, two sons Stephen C. (Sandra) Reed of Vandalia, Rodger V. Reed of Cincinnati; his wife’s sons Karl Wilson of Troy, Matt Wilson of San Francisco, Joe (Brenda) Wilson of Piqua, David (Cindy) Wilson of San Francisco, Dan Wilson of Piqua; six grandchildren: Stephanie Reed, Stacey Reed, Matt Reed, Katie Reed, Jennifer Spraggs, Julie Spraggs, and Jean’s five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert B. Reed, and two sisters, Mary Virginia Reed and Lucille Hemm. Mr. Reed graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1939, and Miami Jacobs College in 1941, and also attended Clemson University. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Buck Sergeant in New Guinea and the Philippines. He began his lengthy career of service to people working for his father at the Stelzer & Reed Insurance Co. He continued the family tradition by becoming a partner in the Reed-Mote-Reed Insurance Agency, and ultimately the Reed-Mote-Staley Insurance Agency as a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Piqua Country Club, Golden Boys Golf Club, American Legion Post #184, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #523, Piqua Kiwanis Club, Border City Luncheon Club, the Piqua Rotary Club, where he served as its President in 1967-68, and sat on the Board of Directors of the Piqua Memorial Hospital for many years. In addition to his love of family and friends, he enjoyed golfing, sports, and music, having played in the Piqua Elks Band. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Angelo C. Caserta as the Celebrant. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 pm Friday at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home where a prayer service will be conducted at 5:00 pm. ![]() WILLIAM R. “RUSS” JOHNSTON William R. “Russ” Johnston, 87, of 914 Clark Ave., Piqua, died at 7:10 am Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Piqua Manor Nursing Home. He was born January 31, 1923 in Detroit Michigan to the late George and Thelma (Crummel) Johnston. Survivors include a son, Stanley Johnston of Piqua; one brother, Donald Kiser of Evansville, Ind.; and two sisters, Juanita (Cecil) Hager of Piqua, and Carolyn (Robert) Houser of Troy. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Mr. Johnston retired as a painter from the F. C. Skinner Painting Company. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Lodge #614. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 am Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Major Robert Klenk officiating. ![]() WALTER M. BANKS Walter M. Banks, 92, of 600 Westview Dr., Piqua, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at his residence. He was born March 5, 1917, in Darke County, to the late Charles C. and Ida (Heins) Banks. He married Dorothy M. Sanders on January 19, 1941 in Greenville; she survives. Mr. Banks is also survived by a son, Gary (Dixie) Banks of Piqua; two grandchildren, Julie (Jim) Brown and Thomas (Carol) Banks; two step-grandchildren, Mike (Barbara) Hickey, and Mark Hickey; and seven great-grandchildren. Walter worked four years as a liaison engineer for Lear, Inc. prior to serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon returning home, he began his career working for the Dunson Auto Supply Company of Piqua, retiring as store manager. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed cars. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 1, at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Shreffler officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Versailles. BARBARA A. SCHERER Barbara A. Scherer, 84, formerly of 1017 Elm St., Piqua, died at 6:22 pm Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the upper Valley Medical Center. She was born September 21, 1925 in Troy to the late Charles J. and Artie (Alexander) Schnell. She married Carl R. Scherer October 6, 1963 in Troy, he preceded her in death November 9, 2007. Survivors include a sister, Gene Moore of Tipp City; and five sisters-in-law, Luella Scherer, Frances Scherer, Barbara Scherer all of Piqua, Helen Scherer of Wichita Kansas; and Penny Sue Conn of St. Paris. She was preceded in death by a sister. Mrs. Scherer graduated Troy High School, was a homemaker, and worked as a secretary most of her life. A private graveside service will be conducted Monday, March 1, 2010 at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity. ![]() JOEL J. HIXSON Joel J. Hixson, 83, formerly of Sidney and Piqua, died at 9:25 am Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Piqua Manor Nursing Home. He was born March 4, 1926 in Piqua to the late John R. and Margaret (McQuown) Hixson. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela (Rick) Haney of Piqua; two grandsons, Matthew Murray, Neilson (Carol) Hixson; two great grandchildren, Eva Marie Hixson, and Ian Scott Hixson; a daughter-in-law, Joan Hixson of Piqua; a brother-in-law, Clifford “Kip” McKinney of Springfield; and his friend and former wife, Phyllis Hixson of Piqua. He was preceded in death by two sons, Todd Hixson, Scott Hixson; and a sister, Yvonne McKinney. Mr. Hixson graduated Piqua Central High School in 1947, retired from the Engineering Dept. of the Copeland Company of Sidney, and traveled with and was a member of Stage Hands Union Local #349 working for various commercials and shows. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran having served as a Corporal during World War II. He was a member of the Piqua American legion Post # 184, and the Madison Ave. First Church of God. He was an outdoor person enjoying hiking, woodworking, square dancing and was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 pm Friday February 26, 2010 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Smith officiating. ![]() VONNIE W. CANTRELL Vonnie W. Cantrell, 84, of 106 Mound St., Piqua, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Heartland of Piqua. He was born September 15, 1925 in West Liberty, Kentucky, to the late John W. and Minnie B. (Wright) Cantrell. Survivors include four sons, Willis (Charlene) Cantrell and Scott Cantrell all of Piqua, Von (Judy) Cantrell of Louisa, Ky., and Denny Cantrell of Texas; three daughters, Cleta (Ray) Cantrell of Troy, Sherry (Ed) Rogers of Troy, and Terry Cantrell of Piqua; twelve grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wallace (Sandy) Cantrell of Columbus, Ind.; and two sisters, Thelma (John) Dulin of Troy, and Lois (Bill) Jones of West Liberty, Ky. He was preceded in death by two brothers, B.H. Cantrell and Ronnie Herschel Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II. He retired in 2004 from the Copeland Company, Sidney, as a Hi-Lo operator following 51½ years of service. He enjoyed gardening, the Cincinnati Reds, Bengals, and Ohio State football. She was born June 22, 1973 in Troy, to Walter and Cathy Tucker Browning of Piqua. She married Timothy D. Ford and he survives. Other survivors include two daughter, Justine & Morgan Ford at home, a sister, Patricia Vance of Piqua, and several nieces and nephews. Jennifer Graduated in 1992 from Troy High School and had worked at C.J. Carry Out on Nicklin Avenue.
